After a 1-1 start on Saturday at the Rock n Rumble tournament in Pasadena, Maryland, the Delaware Fury 12U girls took the #7 seed into Championship Sunday. In their first game, they were able to knock off the #10 seed 8-4 behind a stellar pitching performance by Karlee Cathcart. Five players (Karlee, Bella, Myah, Madi, and Emily) drove in runs. It was a total team effort offensively.
The Fury girls moved on take on the #2 seed in the quarterfinals. Myah Samonte took a no hitter into the 5th inning before finally giving up a hit. The girls knocked out the #2 seed by a score of 6-2 and advanced to the semifinals. Emily Fletcher stayed hot at the plate driving in two of the six runs and scoring one her self.
In the semifinals, Brooke Currier battled on the mound and at the plate to help avenge the loss from Saturday. In the final inning, Brooke stepped up to the plate with the Fury clinging to a 9-7 lead. There were two on and two out when Brooke lined a ball down the right field line. It headed deep into the outfield and Brooke came all the way around to score along with Emily and Ava Watkins. This pushed the lead to 12-7. Karlee came on in the bottom of the inning to strike out the first two batters. The third batter grounded out to Maeleigh Hunt at second base and it was on to the Chip!
In the title game the Fury held a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the last inning. However, a few timely hits pushed the Firebirds over the top with a 6-5 win. It could not have been any closer. In the words of the tournament director, “that was the best championship game I’ve had the pleasure of watching.”
It was a weekend to remember for our 12U Fury girls, coaches, and families! Congratulations 12U!!
